the fourth release from palms & charms sees the return of label co-owner barnaby bruce, ruminating on the perils of fine fabric care. we ve all been there – a lengthy session on the dancefloor playing havoc with the pile of your velvet coat. faced with this dilemma, barnaby reaches for the battered volume, passed down through untold generations of his family, detailing archaic yet uncannily effective methods for extending the life of even the most exquisite textiles. as he does so, the percussive jazz-tinged boogie of sweat on velvet takes over his mind, unleashing a wave of dancefloor euphoria. not to be outdone, pete herbert (reverso 68), unveils his own masterful fabric care techniques, providing a remix that will starch your collar and shake out the creases. not the same clothes, but something brand new. freshly attired, barnaby begins to notice curious and somewhat unsettling noises coming from the next room. he gingerly opens the door, and is confronted with a seance in full swing. strangers sitting around his dining table wait with baited breath for word from the other side. but the unearthly howling of tortured spirits is quickly silenced by the devilish groove of seance fiction. as the arp makes its entrance, every soul is up and dancing. finally, barnaby bruce also provides the eminently useful go go percussion dub of sweat on velvet – rounding out a sartorially elegant ep with something for everyone, from sceptics to lost souls.

what better way to follow up andy meechams (chicken lips / emperor machine) huge gino fontaine originals than a duo of remixes from balearic chieftains pete herbert & stratus as one half of reverso 68 alongside phil mison, and in his own right pete has been behind a ton of mesmerising sunrise and sunset workouts, and he’s more than delivered here - crisp and club ready percussion, those stark punk-funkin’ guitars and his trademark synth work all conspire to cook up a storm on the floor martin jenkins and mat anthonys stratus outfit (remember their superb *spring tide ep* on aficionado last year ?) take a pop at the sublime konkondo on the flip and what a masterpiece it is ! a ten minute, utterly absorbing and expertly evolving piece, which flips the darker elements of the original into a mesmerising, cinematic, early 90s style balearic epic.

bobby soft rocks and jaime lhas join forces as elaborate hoax for a slice of balaeric house on happy valley. the remix from reverso 68 is the cherry on the cake.

supported by tornado wallace (delusions of grandeur), pete herbert (reverso 68/dance disorder)... when jay shepheard launched retrofit in early 2010, deep house with a splash of disco was on the menu. six releases later and the quality of music hasnt faltered once. jays own work has always been the main focus on all five releases but for retrofit 6, rudys midnight machine, (who is in fact robin lee of faze action) takes to the stage alongside an appearance from shepheard (as ee_ef_ex) on remixing duties. >ecstatic love glow< kicks off the ep, diving head first into the disco and synth heavy realm that we expect from retrofit (and, for that matter, from mr lee), whose house outputs with faze action as far back as 97 speak for themselves. the intro of tip tapping hats and congas leads into a penetrating bass guitar, a riff that goes on to be cleverly mirrored by keyboards and later, by what sounds like a scratchy lakland guitar. wooden hats, sirens and a plethora of cosmic elements boogie their way around until the tracks dominant synth parades in and takes over the arrangement, striking a dramatic and smug pose at the close of each stab. the second track of >east side good living< sticks with its predecessors groove, cosmic sirens, electronic whistles and metallic drum taps yet again highlighting rudys modern disco sound

steve laviers motivators collective return with their second release on the excellent here and now recordings! following on from the success of the first 12 (which included jobu being licensed to the legendary jazz bizniz compilation series and a remix by reverso 68) these new tracks continue in the vein of raw, live, polyrhythmic grooves. on the a-side, boosters on is a driving energy-packed track with the former manu dibango rhythm section of noel ekwabi and conti bilong being impressively complemented by yam whos des morgan on congas and bongos. keys are provided by afrika mhkinse (who played with the late great miriam makeba) and faze actions multi-talented rob lee. trombone is laid down by tony trombony hayden who has played with numerous acts including quantic soul orchestra. last but by no means least, vocals come courtesy of hannah khemoh who has most recently been touring as backing vocalist for the incomparable grace jones! on the flip, r2 is a laid-back improvised afro-jazz session, with the musicians laying down some serious feel-good sounds. all this produced by rob lee in the faze action studio.
